January News from the LME Library

Lots of great things are happening at the Lillie M. Evans Library!  At the beginning of the year, we launched our updated website at http://lmelibrary.org.  These changes make it easier for you to locate resources and easier for us to keep the site current.  We hope you like the changes and we look forward to adding more resources to our site!

If you are a fan of The Biggest Loser reality show, now is your chance to compete in our local version. The LME Biggest Loser (season 3!) program runs from January 11-February 29th and can help you to shed pounds and get fit. Weekly weigh-ins started Jan 11 and will be at the library on Wednesdays between 10a-8p. Sign-up at the library and pick up a player packet.  More information can be found at: http://librarylill.blogspot.com/2012/01/lme-biggest-loser-season-3.html

When the Lillie M. Evans Library kicked off Food 4 Fines its Foods-4-Fines program at the Princeville Holiday Homecoming Celebration, we had no idea what to expect. From November 28th thru December 23rd, the library accepted nonperishable foods items in lieu of fines. For each item donated, the library forgave $1 of fines. 55 library patrons donated articles ranging from paper towels to canned food.  These donations brought in 340 pounds to the local food pantry and erased over $200 in fines.  There were also some without fines who wished to donate, and we gladly accepted those donations.  Thank you Princeville community for your generosity!

Tax assistance

Looking for help with your taxes?  Unfortunately, the Lillie M. Evans Library does not have any tax volunteers, but there are several ways to find taxpayer assistance for low-to-middle income or for people over age 60.  Here are some links to find local resources:

As part of the IRS-sponsored TCE Program, AARP offers the Tax-Aide counseling program at over 6,000 sites nationwide during the filing season. Trained and certified AARP Tax-Aide volunteer counselors help people of low-to-middle income with special attention to people age 60 and older. To locate the nearest AARP Tax-Aide site, call 1-888-227-7669 or use the Tax-Aide Locator on AARP's Internet site at: http://www.aarp.org/applications/VMISLocator/searchTaxAideLocations.action

IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers in IL can be found at:

In addition, the IRS has a listing of nationwide free tax preparation sites by state at:

IL Legal Aid article has an article on “How do I File a Tax Return?” with some helpful suggestions.  It can be found at: http://www.illinoislegalaid.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.dsp_Content&contentID=6854

The IRS recommends bringing the following documents when receiving tax payer assistance:
  • Proof of identification
  • Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents and/or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration
  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents
