Survey - March 2026

During the month of March, the LME Library is surveying the members of our library district. This survey will assist us with the development of our next long range plan. We are looking for input from library and non-library users so that we can find out how we can improve our library and services to better meet your needs. Your input is very valuable to us, and all responses will be kept anonymous. If you could take a few minutes to respond to the survey, it would assist in our planning efforts. The online survey is available at: https://bit.ly/LMESurvey61559

Thank you very much for participating in our survey!

Music in the Square Concert series in June

The Lillie M. Evans Library District will be hosting our free concert series on the first 3 Fridays in June 2023. We are excited to be celebrating our sixth anniversary providing these family-friendly concerts in Princeville’s Stevens Square. Please bring your own lawn chairs for your seating comfort or feel free to stay in your vehicle.

The Princeville to Peoria St. Jude Run will provide a water and soda concession (sponsored by the Princeville State Bank) in the Square and local food vendors will provide food options nearby before and during the concerts. Food will be available locally starting at 5pm and the concerts will start at 7pm. Nightly specials at the Feed Store (116 E Spring St), High Voltage (129 E Main St), and the Stomping Ground (211 E Main St) will be listed in the Square each evening when known.

Barry Cloyd will be leading off the concert series on June 2nd. Barry is a Peoria area musician and songwriter who has spent a lifetime creating a performance style that weaves the genres of Blues, Folk, and Celtic music into a unique blend all his own. A strong vocalist and multi-instrumentalist as well as a storyteller, theatrical performer and historian, Barry delivers his music on a multitude of guitars and other stringed instruments, such as 5-string banjo and mandolin.

On June 9th, we will be hosting Central Illinois’ River Valley Big Band. We are excited to host their performance for a second year. Started in 2015 by Susie Dunnan and Ken Hess, they’re focused on bringing the best music has to offer with a live, 18 member band. Enjoy the concert as you listen to the sound of your big band favorites being played.

For our final concert, we are pleased to welcome the Water Street Stompers on June 16th. The Water Street Stompers bring the spirit of Mardi Gras to Peoria with traditional New Orleans Jazz. The music of Mardi Gras gathers influences from the sounds of the Caribbean, Africa, France, and Spain, all while incorporating Native American chanting. Join us for a foot stomping experience!

Steven’s Square is located on the corner of West Evans Street and IL-91 in Princeville. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Lillie M. Evans Library at 207 N. Walnut in Princeville. More information about this and other library programs can be found on the Lillie M. Evans Library website at lmelibrary.org.

Long Range Plans FY23-FY25

During the last year, the library staff and board worked together to develop our next long range plan. Some of you attended a focus group and others completed a survey. Community input was essential in the planning process, and we appreciated the support of both our users and non-users.

The LME Library developed a long-range plan with a series of objectives that support the vision that our community has presented. The FY23-FY25 plan has been adopted, and we look forward to implementing it.

Superior library service doesn’t just happen. To achieve excellence, you need a plan. Thank you to all who assisted in the process as we continue to seek new and better ways to serve our community.

COVID-19 Update on 4/2/20

Due to the Governor’s “stay at home” order extension (Illinois Executive Order 2020-18), the library will be closed to the public until the end of April. We continue to monitor the directives provided by federal, state and local governments and encourage our library users to take measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

During this time our website is still open for business as usual. We appreciate your patience and we hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during these unprecedented times.

The library building has been closed to the public since March 18, 2020. Closing the library was an extraordinarily difficult decision that we have made only because of these extraordinary circumstances. The health and safety of our patrons and staff is our first priority. Early actions to increase social distancing are the best way to contain the spread of COVID-19, according to the CDC. While we are closed, we will continue to carry out extra cleaning and disinfecting of the building.

We will stop charging all overdue fines and extend due dates on all currently checked out materials until May 10. Don’t feel the need to return anything while we are closed. Just stay home and enjoy!

You can also continue to use the library without visiting by downloading eBooks; listening to downloadable and streaming audiobooks; reading digital comics, newspapers, and magazines; learning a language; and much more. Stay connected with us on social media like facebook for more ideas for things to do with your library card, and ways to stay healthy and happy during this complicated time.

We look forward to seeing you online and in person again soon. We’d like to remind the public these service reductions are being done to slow down disease transmission. We are complying with the Governor's recommendations to "flatten the curve" as we work to balance the best interests of the Princeville community with efforts to contain the outbreak.

The LME Library continues to be committed to creating an environment that is safe for our staff and users and minimizes the spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19 (Coronavirus). We are taking these measures to share with you information about it and the steps we are taking to keep our users safe.

Resources:
The library has created a resource list and will continue to add to it as more resources are located. We have put it on our website under RESOURCES | CORONAVIRUS RESOURCES  http://lmelibrary.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=736&Itemid=267

We have already posted some information on our Librarian’s Blog. The first post was on March 10, 2020 http://librarylill.blogspot.com/2020/03/coronavirus-covid-19.html

What LME Library is doing to help prevent the spread of any infectious diseases:
We are currently following the recommendations and guidelines set forth by the Centers for disease Control (CDC) and the Peoria City/County Health Department (PCCHD). We are also following the Illinois Department of Public Health's (IDPH) guidelines for Preventing COVID-19 Spread in Communities and frequently reviewing the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's information for workers.

What you can do to help:
Your help is greatly appreciated to help minimize the spread of disease. Here are some simple steps you can take to help.
  1. Leave home only for essential activities. (see Illinois Executive Order 2020-10)
  2. Practice social distancing.
  3. Wash hands frequently using the World Health Organzation (WHO) video on hand washing. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PmVJQUCm4E
  4. Practice good hygiene by regularly disinfecting frequently touched surfaces and avoid touching your face.
  5. Cover your coughs or sneezes.
  6. Stay home if you are sick or have sick family members at home.
There are additional practices in this handout from the CDC on Keeping workplaces, homes, schools, or commercial establishments safe.

We'll continue to keep the public informed as the pandemic progresses. Stay safe and stop the spread.

Coronavirus : COVID-19

We've been monitoring the Coronavirus news and we want our library users to be well informed with reliable sources. We've pulled together some resources about the coronavirus and have put on our website under RESOURCES | CORONAVIRUS RESOURCES http://lmelibrary.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=736&Itemid=267

In the meantime, we continue to monitor the Center for Disease Control's recommendations for pandemic preparedness and response plans including providing specific guidance on measures to prepare communities to respond to local spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. We are also following the Illinois Department of Public Health's guidelines for Preventing COVID-19 Spread in Communities and frequently reviewing the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's information for workers.

The LME Library's website provides many additional resources for library users. We have online subscription databases that can be used with your LME Library card and PIN and have developed other online resources, internet links and pathfinders.  Please visit the library's website at lmelibrary.org or go directly to the dropdown resources list at http://lmelibrary.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=33&Itemid=110.

Wi-Fi hotspots from the library

With high-speed internet access hard to find in many of Illinois’ rural areas, some public libraries are trying something new: letting patrons check out free wireless hotspots that can connect to the internet just about anywhere.

Recently the public libraries in Princeville and Brimfield received hotspot grants as part of the DigitalLead: Rural Libraries Creating New Possibilities project.  The Lillie M. Evans Library in Princeville received 7 mobile hotspot devices while the Brimfield Public Library District received 10 devices.  Both received free wireless coverage for each device for a one-year period.

This grant was provided by the Public Library Association and Microsoft Corp. to help rural populations reap the benefits of broadband internet connectivity.  Rural libraries are critical for communities to achieve digital access and skills and the resultant employment, economic, educational, and health benefits, often providing the only free access to computers, the Internet, and training in their regions.

The devices connect to the Sprint 4G LTE network and create a Wi-Fi network, allowing users to connect up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled computers or electronic devices.  Patrons must have a library card in good standing, sign a Hotspot Patron Agreement Form and reside within the library district.  More information can be found on each library’s website. For LME Library, go to http://bit.ly/LMEhotspots

The United States as a whole has fallen behind other developed countries in internet download speeds.  According to a recent Microsoft study, 162.8 million people do not use the internet at broadband speeds, and almost 66 million people have low levels of digital readiness, according to the American Library Association. Libraries provide essential services to populations most affected by these challenges, particularly rural and low-income communities.

LME Library and Project Next Generation Grant

The Lillie M. Evans Library District was one of 29 public libraries statewide awarded a FY20 Project Next Generation (PNG) grants by Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White. Project Next Generation (PNG) offers grant funding to public libraries for establishing educational, after-school programs that not only provide access to computers, software and various technology devices, but also hire mentors who are crucial to helping students develop self-confidence and pride in their newly acquired skills. The goal of PNG is to bridge the digital divide by making recent technologies accessible to students who have limited access to computers.

The LME Library will be starting a Technology Ambassador program in fall 2019. We plan to:
  • recruit and train junior high and high school participants to use some of our community’s most requested maker technology—audio/video production, Cricut machines, Silhouette machines, and 3-D printing.
  • assemble and create written, video, and linked resources to provide documentation of targeted technology.
  • create a technology ambassador program with participants team teaching adult learners who want to utilize these technologies.
Learners will cycle through training, documentation and teaching before moving on to the next technology. The goal is to increase access to maker technology in our rural community and allow students and community members to develop knowledge and skills. It will also provide inter-generational interactions and reinforce the library as a community anchor.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten at LME Library

The Lillie M. Evans Library in Princeville is now participating in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge.  Reading to your child is a great way to bond and create warm memories together. It fosters a fondness for books that can last a lifetime. Early successful language activities, such as sharing stories, contribute to the prevention of reading difficulties in school.

Parents can sign up their children at the LME Library desk and pick up their reading packets during regular hours.  Numerous studies estimate that as many as one in five children have difficulties learning to read.  Reading has been associated as an early indicator of academic success.  Public formal education does not typically start until ages 5-6.  Before then, parents and caregivers are the first education providers during the 0-5 early critical years.

The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge is a simple and manageable endeavor. Read a book, any book to your child, with the goal of reading 1,000 before kindergarten. If one book a night is read, that equates to 365 books a year. In 3 years, more than 1,000 books will be shared. LME Library participants will receive a log folder to track their reading. Each time you read 100 books to your child(ren), bring your log to the library for your reward.  Parents can also include readings by others, such as grandparents or siblings, in the child’s reading log. Readers who complete the 1,000 books challenge are invited to an annual party!

A home life that includes positive experiences with reading and the library ensures positive attitudes for reading once in school. The experiences with talking and listening during preschool years, such as when a parent and child read together, help prepare the child to master reading and writing skills in the early elementary school years. Reading has long been associated as an early indicator of academic success.

For more information about the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge, call the library at 309-385-4540 or visit our website at lmelibrary.org.

Audiobooks

Are you a fan of audiobooks?  Listening to an audiobook is just another way to enjoy a good book, and audiobooks are fast becoming the "it girl" of publishing. "According to numerous sources, audiobooks are the new best thing to happen in publishing: for six years in a row, they have enjoyed double-digit sales growth."

The Lillie M. Evans Library has audiobooks available in a variety of formats.  We have books on CD and playaways for all ages in the library to checkout.  Books on CD are just that, CDs that you put into a CD player (be it your car's CD player, your computer CD-ROM drive, your DVD player or a portable CD playing device).

Playaways are recorded books that are on a device that plays the audio for you.  We supply the playaway device with the prerecorded book and a battery and you attach your aux cord (to play in your car), or attach your own earbuds, headphones or speaker.  We even have a device that you can checkout that will allow you to listen to the playaway through a radio without an aux cord.  Both formats are available for all ages: children, young adults and adults.  We can also borrow books on CD and playaways from other libraries.

In addition, we subscribe to two ebook services that also include eaudio books.  The Alliance Digital Media Library commonly known as ADML is from the vendor, OverDrive.  We are part of a consortium that allows our library cardholders to checkout out materials with their library card and PIN.  Users can download eaudio books (and ebooks) onto a variety of devices using the app called Libby.

We are also a member of the eRead Illinois which is from the vendor, Baker & Taylor.  This is also a consortial product that allows our library cardholders to checkout materials with their library card and PIN. Users can download eaudio books (and ebooks) onto a variety of devices using the app called Axis360.

Whatever audiobook format you decide to use, feel free to borrow them from the Lillie M. Evans Library!

Princeville's Kindness Rocks Garden

Last year, the Lillie M. Evans Library, the Princeville Civic Association, and Village Foods started a Kindness Rocks Garden in Princeville. Kindness Rocks Projects have been springing up across the country to encourage, to inspire and to promote good will. The impetus around the project is that one message at just the right time can change your entire day, outlook, or life.

We purchased a ton of rock and placed it in the long planter in front of Village Foods. The LME Library has been hosting rock painting sessions every month since October 2017.  Our next painting programs are January 31 at 11am and February 21st at 3pm.  We provide all the supplies, just bring your artistic talent! Participants can paint a positive message on a rock and hide it around Princeville.

Even if you don't join us for a painting program, feel free to take a rock, paint a positive/inspirational message, return it to the rock garden or leave somewhere else to share some happiness. Please use hashtags: #WTPRocks & #LME on the rocks you paint and when posting to social media so we can follow your rock’s journey. Spread the kindness and inspire others, one rock at a time.
