Summer of Discovery at LME Library

Registration for all ages starts Tuesday, May 30. It may be done online in the convenience of your own home, in person at the library or by phone. Online registration can be done through the library’s website at lmelibrary.org. Registration will continue throughout the month of June.

We are offering 4 different programs this summer. “Read-to-Me” is for birth through Pre-K. The children will get a prize after enjoying 10 books, and they will get a book to keep after reading 20 books. They may continue to read and get prizes as long as prize supplies last.

“Reading by Design” is the theme for K-5th graders (grade just finished). In this program, readers will get a prize every time they finish reading 90 minutes. After reading 360 minutes, readers in this age group will be invited to the private pool party put on by the library in mid-July. Additionally, this group also has been issued a challenge. If they collectively read a minimum of 19,270 minutes by July 8, one lucky winner will be drawn to either dump Jello on Ms. Anita’s head or have it dumped on them.

The “Summer Creators’ Showcase” is for 6th – 12th graders. This program will focus on creating/making/doing a project of the reader’s choice. Finished projects will be displayed or presented at a showcase here at LME on Friday, July 21st.

The “Summer Challenge 6 of 9” is for adults. The log sheet is set up like a tic-tac-toe board with different activities in each square. Upon completing 6 activities, the reader will be entered into a drawing for a prize basket.

That’s just the basics! In addition to the actual reading programs, many fun activities are filling June and July. We have a representative from Ameren doing a safety program, a juggler, a Guinness World Record holder, and a science show that will literally explode! There are also Toddler Storytimes, Pre-K Storytimes and Maker Camps (hands-on STEAM activities). The full calendar can be found on our website at lmelibrary.org.

LME Library's Summer Reading Programs

Summer is the time for relaxing and what better way to relax than to read a good book! This summer’s theme is “Read for the Win!”, and we have lots of programs and activities to go along with reading. There’s something for everyone – this year we again have programs for all ages. Sign-up at the library or online at lmelibrary.org.

The ever-popular “Read-to-Me” summer program for birth through Preschool age (entering Kindergarten Fall 2016) is back. Color in a square on the log sheet for every activity you and your child do together. For every horizontal row completed, your child will get a prize. When the entire sheet is completed (15 activities) your child will get a book to keep (the library will have on hand a special collection of books from which to choose; limit one free book per child). Activities can be completed between June 6 and July 9.

Storytime for children ages 3 to 5 will be held at 10 A.M. on the following Tuesdays: June 7, June 21 and July 5. Children must be 3 before June 7 to participate. Storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes and consists of stories, songs, crafts and games. Please contact the library to sign up so that adequate materials are available at craft time.

Toddler Time for children ages 18 months up to 3 years will be held at 10 A.M. on the following Tuesdays: June 14 and June 28. Toddler Time lasts approximately 30 minutes and consists of stories, songs, games and “free play.” This is a drop-in program and no sign-up is necessary.

NEW THIS YEAR - Readers in the K-5th grade program will set their own reading goals! They, with the help of an adult, can decide whether they want to read a certain number of books, read for time, etc. When any progress is made toward their goal, they may check in by bringing their log form to the library. They may check in once per day (up to 6 times in a week). Each time they will have the choice of a mystery prize pack or putting a ticket in the drawing for the “prize of the week.” They may also donate 1 book per week to the Princeville Grade School for use in the library or classrooms. Books will be placed at the school’s discretion. The library will have a collection of books from which to choose. When readers complete their goal, they may attend the library’s pool party at Princeville Aquatic Center on Sunday, July 17 from 6-8PM for free. Their immediate family members may attend for a discounted admission. Completed logs should be turned in by July 13th.

The 2016 LME Library “Summer Challenge” is for 6th-12th grades. Complete six of the nine challenges (either by reading a certain genre or attending a program) by July 13th to be entered to win a new tablet. The 6th-12th programs will be held from 3:15 – 4:45 PM on Mondays, June 6 – July 18. Books must be read or programs attended between June 6 and July 13.

Our adult summer reading program returns this year! For every two books you read and log between June 6 and July 30, you will earn one entry into the Adult Summer Reading prize drawing (limit 3 reading entries per patron). Read 6 books in 9 weeks to complete Summer Reading and be qualified to win a prize. Logs must be returned to the library before close on July 30. For complete details see the Adult Summer Reading Log or ask our library staff. Only books read between June 6 and July 30 count. You must complete the log to be eligible for the grand prize. Also, if you walk through the Princeville Heritage Days Art Show exhibit between June 17 and July 9 and sign the guest book, you will get a bonus entry into the Adult Summer Reading prize drawing.

"LME Read-to-Me Summer Program" is for birth through Preschool children (entering kindergarten fall 2015). Color in one picture every time you and your Pre-K child enjoy a book together. When 5 pictures are colored in your child will get a prize. When all 15 of the picture are colored in your child will get a book to keep (the library will have on hand a special collection of book from which to choose. Limit one free book per child). Program runs June 1 - July 11.

Story Time for children ages 3 to 5 will be held at 10:00 a.m. on the following Tuesdays: June 9, June 16, June 23, June 30, and July 7. Children must be 3 before June 3rd to participate. Storytime usually lasts approximately 1/2 hour and consists of stories, songs, craft and games.  Please contact the library to sign up so that adequate materials are available at craft time.

The format for K-5th is simple; color one picture for every 15 minutes you read OR for every scheduled LME Library Program you attended. (Visit the LME website at lmelibrary.org for a calendar for dates and times). Readers may check-in and get a prize after 4 pictures are colored in a single week (Limit 1 check-in and 1 prize per week, per reader. Week runs Sunday to Saturday). Readers may also donate 1 book to Princeville District 326 for use in the grade school library or classrooms during their check-in. Fill in 24 total pictures to be eligible for the pool party. Pool party is at the Princeville Aquatic Center on July 25th from 6p-8p. Frequently asked questions are answered on the back of the log sheet. Program runs June 1 - July 11. If you have completed your log you may turn it in starting July 6th.  Final day to turn in logs is JULY 14 @ 5pm.

This summer teens Participate, Explore, Read, and Create at the library. This is for grades 6-12. Complete at least 6 tasks by 07/13/15 in order to qualify for the grand prize drawing. A variety of program will be held EVERY Monday from June 8th to July 13th at 3:15-4:50pm. Dates and program details available on the TeenSpace Blog at lmeteenspace.blogspot.com. Turn in your completed log by July 13th to be entered to win a tablet! Only books read between June 1-July 13th count.

Our adult summer reading program returns this year! Read (or listen to) 6 books and write a short review about why you did/didn't like it. Adults who have completed their log by July 31^st will be eligible to enter the Summer Prize Basket drawing!  Earn a bonus entry by walking through the Princeville Heritage Days Art Show exhibit (June 19^th to July 12^th) and signing the guest book.  Program runs June 1 - July 31. 

In addition to reading, there are many programs planned!  Movies, craft days, and special programs for children and teens will be offered. Princeville Walks at LME Library

Princeville Walks is over—so how did we do?  We did great!  As you may know, Princeville Walks was part of our summer reading activities.  Starting May 29^th, participants recorded the steps or miles they walked, ran, or converted from activities.  Each participant kept a log for the 9-week program which ended July 27, and then reported them to us.  Whenever new miles were turned in, we updated our board in the library to see how far Princeville Walks. 

Overall, we had 21 participants sign-up for the program and 13 turned in miles or steps.  Our major goal was to reach Princeville, Hawaii and we met our goal—Princeville, HI is 4195.1 miles away and our Princeville Walks participants walked a total of 4462.4 miles!  Along the way, we visited the Future Birthplace of James T. Kirk in Riverside, IA (102 miles) and Dorothy’s House and Land of Oz in Liberal, KS (656.9).  Next it was on to the Museum of Clean in Pocatello, ID (1172 miles) and Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum in Las Vegas, NV (1406.2 miles).  When our walkers left the continental United States, they journeyed 2868.6 miles to Butte, Alaska.  Butte is known for its people powered Ferris wheel and for the landmark “sword in the pole.”

Find a Book online search tool

 

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is joining Governor Pat Quinn and Illinois Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch in urging librarians, educators and families to use the free online “Find a Book” search tool to ensure students continue reading while they are out of school this summer.   “Find a Book” provides a way for librarians, parents and children to quickly and easily search for books that match a child’s reading level and interests.  “Find a Book” also helps locate a local library carrying each book title.  “Our Illinois libraries have long promoted year round reading and the `Find a Book’ search tool complements such efforts,’’ said Secretary White. “I encourage parents to read with their children every day to ensure a lifelong love of reading. When children begin reading independently, they are not only making academic gains but opening themselves to new worlds.”

Many studies have indicated that struggling learners score significantly higher on standardized tests taken at the beginning of the summer than they do on the same tests taken at summer’s end. The academic loss is particularly evident in reading, and most pronounced among students from low socioeconomic families who may not have access to books. Studies also show children who read through the summer months maintain more of their academic skills and are better prepared when school resumes.  “Families can prevent the summer reading slide by checking out the free ‘Find a Book’ site and building a summer reading list today,” said State Superintendent Koch. “The more parents help their children make time for reading, the more likely they’ll see successful students.”


 “Find a Book” uses a student's reading score, reported as a Lexile® measure from state standardized tests, including the ISAT, to provide a Lexile range and corresponding list of texts within that range. The Lexile range for a reader is from 50L above his or her Lexile measure to 100L below. If a student attempts to read material above their Lexile range, the text may challenge the student and his or her ability to construct meaning from the reading, and the experience may decrease. Likewise, material below a reader’s Lexile range will provide him or her with little challenge in comprehension.


Users of the “Find a Book” search tool can also find appropriate books without a Lexile measure through a search using the child's grade level and comfort with the typical reading materials at that grade level. The search utility will produce a starting Lexile range that can be further refined. “Find a Book” also offers a Spanish option that allows users to search all of the titles with Spanish Lexile measures. 

Find-A-Book/2011 iREAD Summer Reading Program

"Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is proud to join Governor Pat Quinn and Christopher Koch, Superintendent of the Illinois State Board of Education, in encouraging parents and librarians to check out an important website aimed at keeping children reading during the upcoming summer months when school is not in session.

The Find-a-Book website, www.lexile.com/findabook, has quick and easy access to a list of books that will match a child’s reading level and interests, as well as the nearest libraries carrying each title.

The Find-a-Book site uses a student’s reading score in Lexiles, a measure of reading ability and text difficulty derived from state standardized tests, including the ISAT. The website also features a search option to access appropriate book choices based on grade level and comfort with typical reading materials at that grade level.

Research has shown the powerful impact of continued reading. One review of the impact of summer reading found that children can lose up to 60 percent of their skills during a two-month vacation. Children who read during the summer months, however, can sustain their reading gains and are better prepared for learning when the school bell rings again in the fall.

Secretary White also encourages parents to talk with children about the fun and importance of summer reading and take them to the local public library. Librarians have information about Lexiles and other programs such as the iREAD program, a summer reading program offered through the Illinois Library Association (ILA)."

WE’VE SOMETHING SPECIAL TO SHOW YOU!

Check out our displays! They highlight our collection and change frequently. Our “Recommended” display features books that our staff has read and enjoyed and want to share with you. Our “How To…” display currently presents gardening books, growing vegetables, choosing flowers for your beds, preparing the soil and even landscaping books and techniques. We even have books for children who would like to develop a “green thumb”. Getting into shape this summer is our “Featuring” display. It coincides with our adult summer program of “LME BIGGEST LOSER”. There are books, videos and DVD’s to help you achieve your goal. Our “Up to the Minute” display features monthly specials. Our “May, May” offering celebrates Cinco de Mayo, Moms, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day. It is a month of remembering! Our “Seasonal” presentation has items for brides and grooms! Planning a wedding and honeymoon and even how to get along with the in laws. The videos and DVD’s on our “Walt Disney” display are constantly being refilled! You just can’t beat those Walt Disney family movies! Check those out as well as the additional ever expanding collection that we carry. Learn about the Dewey Decimal System from our other display. We are featuring sections of our non-fiction collection. Currently we are featuring the 200’s, Religion and Social Services.
Our displays change frequently so you can see something new featured very often. We measure the success of our displays by how many books are checked out from our displays. We love having to add books! Come in today and check out something to “check out”!

Summer Reading signups underway now!

Hi, all!

Summer Reading has begun for grades K-7th! If you have not signed up yet, now is the time to do so! The theme for this year is "Read on the Wild Side," and do we ever have some wild things lined up. Two interesting aspects of the summer program:

READING CHALLENGE
If all the kids signed up for summer reading read a total of 1,500 books before closing on July 1, Mrs. Routh will kiss a live snake at the "Snake Man" program at the library on July 2.

BOOK DONATIONS
Every time 5 books are read for the summer program, a book will be donated to the Children's Home of Illinois. Our goal is to donate 300 books to this organization by the end of the summer program.
