Princeville History Programs at the LME Library

As part of our 90th anniversary celebration, the LME Library will be hosting a series of programs on Wednesdays in May at the Library. Our first program was May 3rd on the Highlights of Princeville History. Thank you Julie Delbridge of the Princeville Heritage Museum for presenting this program! During the week of May 10th, we have a slideshow presentation featuring Princeville Businesses through the years. The slideshow is available for viewing in the library or on our website, http://lmelibrary.org. It will also be shown at Community Coffee at the Princeville Heritage Museum on May 10th from 8-10am.

Our third program will be on May 17th at 2pm at the library on Caterpillar’s History in Central Illinois. We’ve had a change of speakers, and now Zack Brown from Caterpillar Inc. will discuss Caterpillar’s history and workforce recruitment through the years. Our May 24th program is on Canning Factory History in Princeville at 2pm at the library. Since 1922, the canning factory has been an important economic player in the history of Princeville. Mary Ann Mercer from Seneca Foods will present a program on the history of the canning factory and the migrant workers program. Our final program is on One Room Schoolhouses and will take place on Wednesday, May 31st at 2pm in the library. This closing program will focus on the history of education and the one-room schools houses in the Princeville area and will be presented by the Princeville Heritage Museum.

We’re not done yet--watch for other 90th anniversary activities in 2017! In September, we will be hosting Princeville Reads, community-wide reading and discussion program focusing on the book, One Summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson. This book is especially relevant since the LME Library was founded in 1927. Copies of the book will be available for checkout at the LME Library and all readers are encouraged to attend a discussion session. We also plan to have an open house late in 2017 to celebrate the Lillie M. Evans Library and the completion of the library addition. More details will be posted on our website at http://lmelibrary.org.

National Lincoln Exhibit Comes to Princeville in April 2014

The Princeville Heritage Museum in conjunction with the Lillie M. Evans Library will be hosting the exhibit, Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War from April 7, 2014 through May 9, 2014.  Organized thematically, the exhibition explores how Lincoln used the Constitution to confront three intertwined crises of the war—the secession of Southern states, slavery, and wartime civil liberties. Visitors will leave the exhibition with a more complete understanding of Abraham Lincoln as president and the Civil War as the nation’s gravest constitutional crisis.

Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War is a traveling exhibition for libraries and was organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The traveling exhibition has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Lincoln: the Constitution and the Civil War is based on an exhibition of the same name developed by the National Constitution Center.  A short video walkthrough (10:25 min.) with Dr. Steve Frank, Chief Interpretive Officer at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, is available online at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hNVUPM5SOg (Preview)

Regular hours at the Princeville Heritage Museum during this exhibit will be Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays & Saturdays 10am-2pm; Tuesdays from 2pm-8pm; and Thursdays from 2pm-6pm.  The exhibit is closed on Sundays.  The Museum is located 325 N Ostrom Avenue in Princeville, IL—15 minutes north of Peoria. The 30,000 sq ft handicap-accessible facility features agriculture antiques, area artifacts, genealogy research, and more. The Akron Townhouse School, a one-room school, is located on the Museum grounds.  For more information and for booking class visits, please call the Museum (309) 385-1916.

In addition to the regular exhibit hours, there will be programs at the Museum on Tuesdays starting April 8th and continuing through April 29th.  The first in this series is Illinois in the Civil War and it will be presented by Tom Emery on April 8th 6:30pm. On April 15th 6:30pm Brian Fox Ellis will present Black Jack Logan: Civil War General, Senator, King-Maker. On April 22nd 1pm, historical impersonator, Debra Ann Miller, takes us back to Mrs. Lincoln’s “blue room salon” in April 1865.  A special tea with Mrs. Lincoln is included—please call the Museum @ 385-1916 for reservations! The last program will be on April 29th 6:30pm.  Jeanne Schultz Angel will present the Anti-Slavery Movement in Black & White and explore the history behind the anti-slavery movement in Northern Illinois. Two of the programs, Black Jack Logan and the Anti-Slavery Movement in Black & White were provided through a grant from the IHC Road Scholars Speakers Bureau.  Visit the LME Library website at lmelibrary.org for more information on these programs.

The Lillie M. Evans Library receives Back to Books grant

The Lillie M. Evans Library District recently received a Back to Books grant for $4,500 from the Illinois State Library.  The Back to Books grant is a collection development grant offered to libraries for the acquisition of books and other materials. Grant funds have been used to purchase books, audios, and DVDs in the non-fiction areas of library & information science, education, languages, sciences, applied sciences, and geography & travel. Materials are appropriate for the adult and young adult age groups.

To introduce these resources, we will have a series of 3 programs focusing on the materials purchased with this grant.  The first program will be an open house highlighting the collection.  Please visit the library on Wednesday, July 31 during our regular hours of 9am-8pm.  Materials selected for this grant will be displayed and available for checkout.

The second program on Wednesday, August 28th will target homeschoolers and resources available from the library through our newly created homeschool resource web page.  As part of the grant, we will be developing a section of our website for our homeschooling parents and students.  This will include links to online resources as well as tips on using the library catalog.  The page will also have information about any local groups that focus on homeschooling activities.

The final program will be a travel program at 6pm on Wednesday, September 25th.  It will start with a showing of one of our new travel DVDs (we will choose one that meets our public performance license) and will include a book talk of some of our new materials in this area.  Visit our website at http://lmelibrary.org for more information about this grant and these programs.

The funds from this grant will make it possible for us to better meet the needs of our local community.  Materials were purchased through a Library Services and Technology Act grant administered by the Illinois State Library using funds provided by the U.S Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Week 3 of the sewing program - March 16

There are still 3 sewing programs left, and we’ve already accomplished a lot!

Last week, we customized a sewing cover or mat for our machines.  We also went over the basics of rotary cutting and practiced by making our own cuts.  At our next meeting, we will get to make the fabric bowls (which we didn’t get to last week).  Kits are already cut for the bowls but don’t forget your sewing machine, thread, and scissors!  Other sewing projects we are interested in making are mitered napkins and infinity scarves.  The infinity scarf project will require you to purchase your own fabric.  You will need 18”-20” of 60” fabric that is knit or chiffon (or some other scarf type fabric).  We do not have any knit fabrics in our fabric stash boxes.

Join us on March 16th at 10am-noon in the LME Library’s meeting room for more fun and practice!  We look forward to seeing everyone—don’t forget to sign up online or by calling the library at 385-4540

If you do not have fabric KITS WILL BE PROVIDED

If your fabric is not cut to size. We will help you do that

A demonstration of rotary cutting will also be covered. You do not need to buy all those items needed for that. Just wait--it is a big expense, and we have plenty to share for this class.

UPDATE 3/4/13: We had a great time at the LME Library’s Sewing Program on 3/2/13.  Beauford helped us adjust our machines and taught us a nifty pillowcase trick—loved it!  If you want to see a video demonstrating this burrito pillowcase technique, you can go to http://www.thediydish.com/2011/12/how-to-make-a-pillowcase-join-the-1-million-pillowcase-challenge/

Projects for week 2 include : sewing machine mat or easy cover or soup bowl potholder( Beauford uses hers to hold a cold bowl of frozen yogurt LOL)

*All purchased fabric should be width of fabric and NOT fat quarter size

Don’t worry that you need to shop for fabric!  We have 2 large containers of cotton fabrics they are very nice mostly country/floral prints if you would like to make your sewing accessories from these.  Batting will be provided for your machine accessories.

For those making the fabric bowls, we will have a kit already made up for you.

If none of these projects catch your eye, you can make an infinity scarf.  This will require you to purchase your own fabric.  You will need 18”-20” of 60” fabric that is knit or chiffon (or some other scarf type fabric).  We do not have any knit fabrics in our fabric stash boxes.

We look forward to seeing everyone—don’t forget to sign up online or by calling the library at 385-4540

Our Red Scarf Project is off to a good start.  So far we have collected 20 handmade scarves.  These scarves will be distributed by Foster Care 2 Success in February 2013.  Guidelines are available on the LME Library website http://lmelibrary.org and scarves will be collected through December 1st.  If you don’t know how to crochet but are willing to learn, there are 2 programs scheduled in November to help you master the art of single and double crochet.  Please join us on November 7 and Nov 14 and bring a “size H” crochet hook.  We will have work sessions from 2:30-3:30pm or 5-6pm both days, and we have yarn available to get you started.  If you already know how to crochet and want to help, you can join us too!

Books and materials can be donated all year long.

Princeville Walks at LME Library

Princeville Walks is over—so how did we do?  We did great!  As you may know, Princeville Walks was part of our summer reading activities.  Starting May 29th, participants recorded the steps or miles they walked, ran, or converted from activities.  Each participant kept a log for the 9-week program which ended July 27, and then reported them to us.  Whenever new miles were turned in, we updated our board in the library to see how far Princeville Walks.

Overall, we had 21 participants sign-up for the program and 13 turned in miles or steps.  Our major goal was to reach Princeville, Hawaii and we met our goal—Princeville, HI is 4195.1 miles away and our Princeville Walks participants walked a total of 4462.4 miles!  Along the way, we visited the Future Birthplace of James T. Kirk in Riverside, IA (102 miles) and Dorothy’s House and Land of Oz in Liberal, KS (656.9).  Next it was on to the Museum of Clean in Pocatello, ID (1172 miles) and Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum in Las Vegas, NV (1406.2 miles).  When our walkers left the continental United States, they journeyed 2868.6 miles to Butte, Alaska.  Butte is known for its people powered Ferris wheel and for the landmark “sword in the pole.”

Thank you to everyone who participated in Princeville Walks—many people enjoyed this program, and we hope you did too!  If you were a participant, stop by the library anytime and pick up your certificate of completion.  For those of you looking for more fitness activities, the LME Biggest Loser Fall 2012 will be starting in September.  Visit the library’s website at http://lmelibrary.org for additional information on this and other library programs.
